Read: Psalm 2
I was in my sophomore year in high school and struggling to keep my mouth shut during class. I always wanted to say more than I should. In attempt to get me to comply my teacher, knowing I wanted to get a good grade in the class, began a “demerit” disciplinary system. Every time I got caught talking the teacher would deduct five points from my overall grade. It was brutal. You think I would’ve gotten the point. Nope…
I feel like most of my life has been a power struggle. I’ve not wanted more power than I’ve earned or deserved for the different positions or supporting roles I’ve served in. Though, when I look at these situations I can now “in hindsight” see that I was grasping for power from people who had it. As a 20 something I didn’t understand that. I simply wanted to keep progressing and hadn’t really considered that if I was to be given authority or power… someone else would have to release it… How many times in my life have I unwittingly stepped into a power struggle. I honestly can’t tell you. Probably more than I want to know. The frustration and angst of it all can be difficult and tiring. I’ve learned to not grasp at power.
God is in charge.
He puts people in power.
The wise respond by acknowledging the power of God and supporting it.
The focus of our lives mustn’t be about trying to hold to or cling to power. Rather, it should be to acknowledge God’s power, the people he has placed in these positions and support them. I’ll be honest, it’s easier to say that now than it was 10 years ago. In my mid 20’s I had a whole lot of passion toward challenging cultural power structures. I’m in my mid 30’s now and have experienced some unique and extravagant blessing. I’ve learned that I have to trust God to change the people in power. It’s not my job.
My job is to focus on building up the next generation of leaders. Major movements of God happen when we heavily invest future leaders. These young people are looking for an experiential or tangible experience with God and you know what? God meets them there and He changes their lives. The movement of God is not about power… but submission. That is the headspace and heart-space I want to live in….
Prayer: God help us to be people who are wholly focused on you. That we recognize the Holy God that you are and do not second guess your decisions. Help us to relinquish our need to acquire power. Place in our heart a passion to serve your purposes and chase after you above all other things.
